I hate the term "mall crawler" or "mall rated"

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, I get it; lots of people buy capable vehicles for the purpose of posing or appearing adventurous or maybe just because its en vogue. Here is the thing though, If Jesse Owens wants to take a leisurely stroll around a duck pond, he's still Jessie Owens. Can we stop bagging on the car and start sending our indignation to the owners of said vehicles who refuse to enjoy the capability built into these vehicles? Even a mildly capable off roader can still kill it with the right attitude.

I thought that was already the case...

While I understand that every driver has their own vehicle preferences, the fact that someone chooses a vehicle that is harder to control and can cause more damage to others on what is basically a whim is not something I could ever agree with.

The term is almost always in reference to the car. i.e. thats just a mall crawler, oh that jeep is mall rated. We need a better term that applies clearly to the driver. "oye, that blokes a joey" or "hey look, someone from vermont" you know, something universal.

I think you are grossly oversimplifying the situation. I don't like an unused 4x4 just as much or more than the next guy, but its a damn good thing Jeep sells so many wranglers to posers, cause it means they keep building it and it keeps getting better.

Idk, a lot of Jeep groups I frequent are full of people whining about other people doing the wrong things to/with their Jeep. The Wrangler or XJ itself is capable out of the box, no one's questioning that.

While I understand that every driver has their own vehicle preferences, the fact that someone chooses a vehicle that can go much faster than the speed limit and can cause more damage to themselves on what is basically a whim is not something I could ever agree with.

Not that I agree with that example, but yours can go both ways.

The risk is that in selling so many Wranglers to posers is that those posers come to Jeep focus groups and complain about the NVH and poor handling, encouraging them to make design changes that perhaps improve the on-road performance at the direct expense of off-road capability or aftermarket modification (see e.g. IRS in '15 Mustang).

What about the ones that are built to look like big, capable, SUVs but in reality can't handle a grassy knoll?

I can tell you from the chats I've had with Jeep engineers...they are very aware of who the key market is for the wrangler...they aren't going to be dumbing it down anytime soon.

Still the owners faults.

Speaking of which, I had a set of unused 33 inch desert race tires I wanted to sell because they were too small for the new truck. These tires retail at $500 each new. Guy with a red Jeep on stock lift says he's interested and wants to see them/try putting them on his Jeep. Sure, why not? While he's putting one of the tires on he tells me he's never been off road, never intends to be off road, and just wants them "for the look." Top end performance desert race tires, for the look. I talked him out of the sale because the tires deserved better.

about the same as mall crawler. Usually reserved for forums and such. Poser comes to mind as well.

Yes, but what about some two-bit half-wit that hits someone with his Jeep and kills them? And it would be for no better reason than because he wants to look cool, brah.

Agreed. Whenever I've made this comment it was ALWAYS directed at the owner, never the vehicle. The vehicle is just the innocent victim of someone's preferences.

Also, while I may find a mall crawler stupid, it's their money and their vehicle. To each their own.
